"Materials and Process" course offering at Swiss Institute / Contemporary Art
Natural dyeing and quilting workshop at The Wassaic Project with Natalie Baxter
Wassaic Project artist residency alums Natalie Baxter and Julia Norton will be offering a 5-hour intensive workshop exploring natural dyeing and appliqué quilting. Seasonally curated food and drink incorporating foraged ingredients will be provided by The Lantern.
In the first two hours of the workshop, Norton will introduce several natural dyes and their histories (including dyes derived from ingredients gathered right in Wassaic!) and demonstrate how to dye fabric using locally foraged natural materials. Norton will provide participants with her own handmade natural inks to explore these natural colors on paper, and walk participants through the step-by-step process of achieving natural color on fabric. In addition to dyeing small objects to take home, participants will dye fabrics to use in the second half of the workshop.
In the hour-long break between parts one and two, participants will enjoy lunch and refreshments from Erika DaSilva and Johnny Dearth of the Lantern Inn, inspired by seasonal ingredients and foraged edibles. Alcoholic beverages will be offered in the afternoon.
In the final two hours of the workshop, Natalie Baxter will demonstrate how to quilt using the appliqué method — a traditional technique that incorporates representational imagery into quilt making. Participants will make their own individual quilt squares using the fabric they dyed in the morning, as well as pre-dyed fabric in an array of natural colors.
This workshop will take place entirely outside on the porch of the Wassaic Project's Maxon Mills with access to indoor bathrooms. Participants are asked to wear masks indoors. In the event that it rains, the workshop will move indoors to the Art Nest at Maxon Mills and participants will be required to show proof of vaccination. Anyone who is unable to do so or feels unsafe indoors will be provided with a full refund.
